For the last few years if you have wanted to eliminate the signs of aging like wrinkles, sagging skin and other lines then it is more than likely you would consider using botox as the treatment of choice but a great many people do not know exactly what it is. Despite its recent rise to fame, the original research into botox is a few decades old.

Used originally for disorders of the brain, botox was first studied back in the early 1960’s and derived from the now famous poison Botulinum toxin. Botox paralyses the muscles that cause wrinkles keeping them in a relaxed state and when given sufficient injections over a period of time; frown lines for example, will in effect reduce in intensity. In many cases the lines eventually disappear completely but botox can also be injected into the muscles of the face that cause crows feet, forehead lines and frown lines.

Botox injections are a purified and watered down version of the sometimes fatal Botulinum poison and because of the purification process can be used in cosmetic surgery. Unfortunately, lines and creases are formed whenever we laugh or make any other facial gesture, caused by muscles contracting.

When we are young and our skin is more elastic, these lines do not show but as we age the constant sue of facial muscles leaves us with lines and whilst many manufacturers have tried to produce creams that can get rid of these wrinkles and creases, unsuccessfully, botox can, at least for a short period. However, botox treatment is expensive and that is why it is considered as something only celebrities have as a single injection can cost anywhere from a few hundred to over a thousand dollars.

It may be a few years yet before we see the result of long term use of botox but that doesn’t seem to concern those people who are using it now.
