The uses of botox seem to be increasing all the time but despite all the hype over its use, there is still a great deal of ignorance about how it achieves the results it does. Before this can be done we need to go back a little in time to when botox was originally discovered.

The original intent for the research into Botulinum toxin was to try and treat disorders of the mind in the 1960’s. Then a few decades later in 1989, the Federal Drug Administration in America finally approved its use to treat disorders associated with vision; excessive, involuntary blinking and for people suffering with crossed eyes plus on occasion for wrinkles.

More research was carried out into other medical uses and in 2000 it was allowed to be used on patients that had serious contractions in their shoulders and neck, easing the pain and contractions; it as also given the ok to be used on another more unusual eye condition. The strange discovery they made quite by accident was one that help to reduce the visible lines between the eyebrows and after this in 2002 the FDA approved it’s use on this condition, botox as a cosmetic procedure, was born.

When Botox is injected into the muscles of the forehead, it blocks nerve impulses which results in the weakening of the muscles that cause frowning and eventually over a period of several months, given enough of these injections, the frown lines start to soften. The lines will to the casual observer, disappear but the same process can now be used on laughter lines around the eyes and forehead lines as well.

Botox injections are a purified and watered down version of the sometimes fatal Botulinum poison and because of the purification process can be used in cosmetic surgery. Of course we all like to laugh and obviously use our faces for other gestures but the muscles controlling this are the cause of the line we see and obviously, botox injections can stop this.

Many cosmetic manufacturers have tried to create creams to eliminate the creases and lines that are formed on our faces after years of wear and tear but botox is the only treatment to date that can actually rid them from us. Because botox paralyzes the facial muscles, people who have regular treatment often look as though they are dummies as they cannot smile properly or make other facial gestures fully that we tend to rely on when we communicate.

Whilst the face can still provide expressions, they are seriously reduced but this give the effect of someone looking much younger than they really are. Some will be happy that the people who can afford botox treatments are still the wealthy and with individual treatments in the low to very high hundreds of dollars it looks to remain that way.

It may be a few years yet before we see the result of long term use of botox but that doesn’t seem to concern those people who are using it now.
