The uses of botox seem to be increasing all the time but despite all the hype over its use, there is still a great deal of ignorance about how it achieves the results it does. In order to appreciate just what botox is we need a brief history lesson into its discovery, quite a while ago now.

Used originally for disorders of the brain, botox was first studied back in the early 1960’s and derived from the now famous poison Botulinum toxin. Then a few decades later in 1989, the Federal Drug Administration in America finally approved its use to treat disorders associated with vision; excessive, involuntary blinking and for people suffering with crossed eyes plus on occasion for wrinkles.

In the year 2000 it was approved to treat cervical dystonia which is a disorder that causes severe neck and shoulder contractions and also a very unusual side effect of eye disorder treatments. In all the research that was going on with botox, doctors had found that it was effective at reducing frown lines around the eyebrow area and following this the FDA finally recognized the implications and agreed its commercial use in 2002.

Botox paralyses the muscles that cause wrinkles keeping them in a relaxed state and when given sufficient injections over a period of time; frown lines for example, will in effect reduce in intensity. With continued use, the frown lines in most instances will completely vanish but the same effect can be found in lines at the sides of the eyes, mouth and other forehead lines.

Botulinum toxin can be deadly and at the very least make us unwell but when it is used in cosmetic procedures, the form used is one that has been cleaned up and diluted, posing no threat. Unfortunately, lines and creases are formed whenever we laugh or make any other facial gesture, caused by muscles contracting.

The wonderful thing tom many people is that botox can help reduce and often eliminate the signs of aging that have taken years to appear, something that many skin creams have attempted to do for many years. Because botox paralyzes the facial muscles, people who have regular treatment often look as though they are dummies as they cannot smile properly or make other facial gestures fully that we tend to rely on when we communicate.

Whilst the face can still provide expressions, they are seriously reduced but this give the effect of someone looking much younger than they really are. Botox treatments are still costly though with some single injections costing in the low to high hundreds of dollars.

It may be a few years yet before we see the result of long term use of botox but that doesn’t seem to concern those people who are using it now.
