Botox has become a well used cosmetic enhancement over the last few years by ridding people of age line and wrinkles but how much do you know about Botox. In order to appreciate just what botox is we need a brief history lesson into its discovery, quite a while ago now.

Botox is derived from Botulinum toxin, discovered nearly five decades ago and was tested for use as a treatment for disorders of the mind. A few decades later after much research, the FDA granted permission for it to be used medically and the first patients to make use of the drug were those with eye conditions that included people with eyes that were not aligned correctly and those that suffered from uncontrollable blinking called blepharospasm.

Then later in the first year of the new millennium after many more years of research, it was granted permission to be used on patients with contractions in the upper back and shoulder and neck area plus another eye disorder. The strange discovery they made quite by accident was one that help to reduce the visible lines between the eyebrows and after this in 2002 the FDA approved it’s use on this condition, botox as a cosmetic procedure, was born.

Botox paralyses the muscles that cause wrinkles keeping them in a relaxed state and when given sufficient injections over a period of time; frown lines for example, will in effect reduce in intensity. The lines will to the casual observer, disappear but the same process can now be used on laughter lines around the eyes and forehead lines as well.

Botox injections are a purified and watered down version of the sometimes fatal Botulinum poison and because of the purification process can be used in cosmetic surgery. The problem is that when we laugh, cry or make any facial gesture, lines and wrinkles appear caused by the muscles that have helped create the expression and botox can eliminate these lines.

Botox is able to take back for a temporary period all those years of lines, creases and wrinkles that have formed from the use of our facial muscles; a problem we do not have when we are young. After being injected into the effected area, it temporarily paralyzes these muscles so that you can’t make these expressions and that’s why people who have had Botox injections can look like mannequins.

Whilst the face can still provide expressions, they are seriously reduced but this give the effect of someone looking much younger than they really are. Some will be happy that the people who can afford botox treatments are still the wealthy and with individual treatments in the low to very high hundreds of dollars it looks to remain that way.

It may be a few years yet before we see the result of long term use of botox but that doesn’t seem to concern those people who are using it now.
