With all the hype and fuss over people getting Botox injections for everything from a sagging chin to a droopy eyelid, one has to wonder just what it is that Botox does and how it works. Despite its recent rise to fame, the original research into botox is a few decades old.

The original intent for the research into Botulinum toxin was to try and treat disorders of the mind in the 1960’s. For patients suffering with uncontrollable blinking and crossed eyes, a treatment finally came in 1989 when the FDA granted approval for botox to be used on these patients and also for wrinkles.

By the new millennium botox had been approved for a number of other conditions including one where severe neck and shoulder contractions were causing discomfort to a number of people. In all the research that was going on with botox, doctors had found that it was effective at reducing frown lines around the eyebrow area and following this the FDA finally recognized the implications and agreed its commercial use in 2002.

You see botox is a neuro toxin, meaning it paralyses the muscles it is injected into and makes them relax so frown lines will gradually soften and subside if sufficient treatments are given. In many cases the lines eventually disappear completely but botox can also be injected into the muscles of the face that cause crows feet, forehead lines and frown lines.

The injections actually contain a purified form of the Botulinum toxin at only a fraction of the true strength which in other forms can make us seriously unwell. The problem is that when we laugh, cry or make any facial gesture, lines and wrinkles appear caused by the muscles that have helped create the expression and botox can eliminate these lines.

The wonderful thing tom many people is that botox can help reduce and often eliminate the signs of aging that have taken years to appear, something that many skin creams have attempted to do for many years. After being injected into the effected area, it temporarily paralyzes these muscles so that you can’t make these expressions and that’s why people who have had Botox injections can look like mannequins.

Depending on the amount of treatments, a person who ahs botox treatment can look fairly normal but their facial gestures will be restricted so that the creases and lines do not show. The obvious downside to this treatment is the cost and that is why it has been coined as something only celebrities have carried out as the least expensive injection can still cost upwards of 300 dollars to in excess of 1,000 dollars.

Whether there are any long term effects from continued use of botox is still unknown as the treatment is still to new but for those people who do use it, it doesn’t seem to matter.
