Nowadays the quick fix for signs of aging like saggy skin and age lines is a course of botox injections but there is still a great deal of ignorance about what botox actually is. Before this can be done we need to go back a little in time to when botox was originally discovered.

Botox is derived from Botulinum toxin, discovered nearly five decades ago and was tested for use as a treatment for disorders of the mind. Continued treatments mean in many cases the lines disappear and now the same treatment is used on other areas of the face like the crows’ feet, laughter lines and other facial wrinkles.

Botox injections are a purified and watered down version of the sometimes fatal Botulinum poison and because of the purification process can be used in cosmetic surgery. The reason people want to use botox injections is because every time you laugh, smile, frown, or for that matter do just about anything with your facial muscles, wrinkles are caused by the underlying contractions of these muscles.

Many cosmetic manufacturers have tried to create creams to eliminate the creases and lines that are formed on our faces after years of wear and tear but botox is the only treatment to date that can actually rid them from us. These injections are used directly into the muscles that control facial expressions, paralyzing them for a short period effectively making it almost impossible for someone to smile for example but the fact that facial expressions are reduced can give the effect of a doll like appearance.

Because frown line, wrinkles and facial creases have all but disappeared, it provides the user with a look of someone much younger. However, botox treatment is expensive and that is why it is considered as something only celebrities have as a single injection can cost anywhere from a few hundred to over a thousand dollars.

It may be a few years yet before we see the result of long term use of botox but that doesn’t seem to concern those people who are using it now.
