For the last few years if you have wanted to eliminate the signs of aging like wrinkles, sagging skin and other lines then it is more than likely you would consider using botox as the treatment of choice but a great many people do not know exactly what it is. But to understand exactly what Botox is and what it does, we first have to look at just how this amazing miracle of modern science came to be.

The original intent for the research into Botulinum toxin was to try and treat disorders of the mind in the 1960’s. A few decades later after much research, the FDA granted permission for it to be used medically and the first patients to make use of the drug were those with eye conditions that included people with eyes that were not aligned correctly and those that suffered from uncontrollable blinking called blepharospasm.

In their research, doctors discovered that Botox softened the frown lines between the eyebrows and it was after this discovery that Botox officially came into existence and was FDA approved for cosmetic use in 2002.

Now botox is injected into a number of areas, one of which is the forehead to help lessen the effect of years of the muscles here causing frown lines to appear. With continued use, the frown lines in most instances will completely vanish but the same effect can be found in lines at the sides of the eyes, mouth and other forehead lines.

The injections actually contain a purified form of the Botulinum toxin at only a fraction of the true strength which in other forms can make us seriously unwell. Of course we all like to laugh and obviously use our faces for other gestures but the muscles controlling this are the cause of the line we see and obviously, botox injections can stop this.

Many cosmetic manufacturers have tried to create creams to eliminate the creases and lines that are formed on our faces after years of wear and tear but botox is the only treatment to date that can actually rid them from us. Muscles in the area of the injection become paralyzed temporarily so they cannot move which provide the user with a facial surface that is smooth and often referred to as looking like a dummy or mannequin.

Because frown line, wrinkles and facial creases have all but disappeared, it provides the user with a look of someone much younger. Botox treatment is expensive with the average cost of just one Botox injection in the United States ranging from a few hundred dollars to in excess of 1,000 dollars depending on where the injection is used.

Whether there are any long term effects from continued use of botox is still unknown as the treatment is still to new but for those people who do use it, it doesn’t seem to matter.
