For the last few years if you have wanted to eliminate the signs of aging like wrinkles, sagging skin and other lines then it is more than likely you would consider using botox as the treatment of choice but a great many people do not know exactly what it is. In order to appreciate just what botox is we need a brief history lesson into its discovery, quite a while ago now.

Botox may be famous now for it’s use in cosmetic surgery but it wasn’t always that way, as when it was first being studied by scientists in the 1960’s it was for methods to treat neurological problems in people. It wasn’t until around 1989 that the Federal Drug Administration agreed to allow its use in medical procedures to help people with disorders of the eye like those that cause uncontrollable blinking and crossed eyes.

Botox was also found to be effective at helping patients with neck and shoulder contractions and in the year 2000 was given the all clear to treat this condition in addition to other eye related problems. In their research, doctors discovered that Botox softened the frown lines between the eyebrows and it was after this discovery that Botox officially came into existence and was FDA approved for cosmetic use in 2002.

Botox paralyses the muscles that cause wrinkles keeping them in a relaxed state and when given sufficient injections over a period of time; frown lines for example, will in effect reduce in intensity. With continued use, the frown lines in most instances will completely vanish but the same effect can be found in lines at the sides of the eyes, mouth and other forehead lines.

Botulinum toxin can be deadly and at the very least make us unwell but when it is used in cosmetic procedures, the form used is one that has been cleaned up and diluted, posing no threat. The popularity of botox is due to the fact that we all have wrinkles and lines when we smile, laugh and make other facial gestures which are the result of muscles in the face.

After years of making these expressions the wear and tear on your face begins to be noticeable and the lines start to become permanent and when these creases become permanent, no kind of skin cream can get rid of them but botox can eliminate them temporarily. These injections are used directly into the muscles that control facial expressions, paralyzing them for a short period effectively making it almost impossible for someone to smile for example but the fact that facial expressions are reduced can give the effect of a doll like appearance.

A person who has undergone this treatment still has enough movement to provide some expressions but they are limited and because most of the wrinkles and creases have all but disappeared, it appears that the person is younger than their true years. The obvious downside to this treatment is the cost and that is why it has been coined as something only celebrities have carried out as the least expensive injection can still cost upwards of 300 dollars to in excess of 1,000 dollars.

The side-effects of regular botox use may take some time to appear as it is only a recent addition to the cosmetic surgeon’s armory but for now, its use does not seem to be diminishing.
