Botox has become a well used cosmetic enhancement over the last few years by ridding people of age line and wrinkles but how much do you know about Botox. But to understand exactly what Botox is and what it does, we first have to look at just how this amazing miracle of modern science came to be.
Botox may be famous now for it’s use in cosmetic surgery but it wasn’t always that way, as when it was first being studied by scientists in the 1960’s it was for methods to treat neurological problems in people. In 1989 Botox was finally approved by the FDA to treat eye muscle disorders like blepharospasm (uncontrollable blinking), strabismus (crossed eyes) and even wrinkles.
Then later in the first year of the new millennium after many more years of research, it was granted permission to be used on patients with contractions in the upper back and shoulder and neck area plus another eye disorder. In all the research that was going on with botox, doctors had found that it was effective at reducing frown lines around the eyebrow area and following this the FDA finally recognized the implications and agreed its commercial use in 2002.

Botox paralyses the muscles that cause wrinkles keeping them in a relaxed state and when given sufficient injections over a period of time; frown lines for example, will in effect reduce in intensity. If this procedure is continued, in many instances the lines will soften so much they will appear to disappear and now the same procedure is used on other areas of the face where lines form, generally with age.
Botox injections are a purified and watered down version of the sometimes fatal Botulinum poison and because of the purification process can be used in cosmetic surgery. Unfortunately, lines and creases are formed whenever we laugh or make any other facial gesture, caused by muscles contracting.
When we are young and our skin is more elastic, these lines do not show but as we age the constant sue of facial muscles leaves us with lines and whilst many manufacturers have tried to produce creams that can get rid of these wrinkles and creases, unsuccessfully, botox can, at least for a short period. Muscles in the area of the injection become paralyzed temporarily so they cannot move which provide the user with a facial surface that is smooth and often referred to as looking like a dummy or mannequin.
Whilst the face can still provide expressions, they are seriously reduced but this give the effect of someone looking much younger than they really are. Botox treatments are still costly though with some single injections costing in the low to high hundreds of dollars.
The side-effects of regular botox use may take some time to appear as it is only a recent addition to the cosmetic surgeon’s armory but for now, its use does not seem to be diminishing.
