The uses of botox seem to be increasing all the time but despite all the hype over its use, there is still a great deal of ignorance about how it achieves the results it does. To help with this, we need to step back a few decades to when botox was first researched and used.

Botox may be famous now for it’s use in cosmetic surgery but it wasn’t always that way, as when it was first being studied by scientists in the 1960’s it was for methods to treat neurological problems in people. In their research, doctors discovered that Botox softened the frown lines between the eyebrows and it was after this discovery that Botox officially came into existence and was FDA approved for cosmetic use in 2002.

When Botox is injected into the muscles of the forehead, it blocks nerve impulses which results in the weakening of the muscles that cause frowning and eventually over a period of several months, given enough of these injections, the frown lines start to soften. The lines will to the casual observer, disappear but the same process can now be used on laughter lines around the eyes and forehead lines as well.

The injections actually contain a purified form of the Botulinum toxin at only a fraction of the true strength which in other forms can make us seriously unwell. The popularity of botox is due to the fact that we all have wrinkles and lines when we smile, laugh and make other facial gestures which are the result of muscles in the face.

Many cosmetic manufacturers have tried to create creams to eliminate the creases and lines that are formed on our faces after years of wear and tear but botox is the only treatment to date that can actually rid them from us. These injections are used directly into the muscles that control facial expressions, paralyzing them for a short period effectively making it almost impossible for someone to smile for example but the fact that facial expressions are reduced can give the effect of a doll like appearance.

Depending on the amount of treatments, a person who ahs botox treatment can look fairly normal but their facial gestures will be restricted so that the creases and lines do not show. Botox treatments are still costly though with some single injections costing in the low to high hundreds of dollars.

It may be a few years yet before we see the result of long term use of botox but that doesn’t seem to concern those people who are using it now.
