Nowadays the quick fix for signs of aging like saggy skin and age lines is a course of botox injections but there is still a great deal of ignorance about what botox actually is. Before this can be done we need to go back a little in time to when botox was originally discovered.

Botox is derived from Botulinum toxin, discovered nearly five decades ago and was tested for use as a treatment for disorders of the mind. In 1989 Botox was finally approved by the FDA to treat eye muscle disorders like blepharospasm (uncontrollable blinking), strabismus (crossed eyes) and even wrinkles.

By the new millennium botox had been approved for a number of other conditions including one where severe neck and shoulder contractions were causing discomfort to a number of people. Scientists found that if the drug was injected into the lines between the eyebrows it would gradually soften them and make them disappear so after tests, in 2002 the FDA allowed it to be used for the first cosmetic enhancement and botox had a new field of use.

When Botox is injected into the muscles of the forehead, it blocks nerve impulses which results in the weakening of the muscles that cause frowning and eventually over a period of several months, given enough of these injections, the frown lines start to soften. In many cases the lines eventually disappear completely but botox can also be injected into the muscles of the face that cause crows feet, forehead lines and frown lines.

The injections actually contain a purified form of the Botulinum toxin at only a fraction of the true strength which in other forms can make us seriously unwell. The problem is that when we laugh, cry or make any facial gesture, lines and wrinkles appear caused by the muscles that have helped create the expression and botox can eliminate these lines.

Botox is able to take back for a temporary period all those years of lines, creases and wrinkles that have formed from the use of our facial muscles; a problem we do not have when we are young. Because botox paralyzes the facial muscles, people who have regular treatment often look as though they are dummies as they cannot smile properly or make other facial gestures fully that we tend to rely on when we communicate.

Because frown line, wrinkles and facial creases have all but disappeared, it provides the user with a look of someone much younger. The obvious downside to this treatment is the cost and that is why it has been coined as something only celebrities have carried out as the least expensive injection can still cost upwards of 300 dollars to in excess of 1,000 dollars.

It may be a few years yet before we see the result of long term use of botox but that doesn’t seem to concern those people who are using it now.
