For the last few years if you have wanted to eliminate the signs of aging like wrinkles, sagging skin and other lines then it is more than likely you would consider using botox as the treatment of choice but a great many people do not know exactly what it is. To help with this, we need to step back a few decades to when botox was first researched and used.

Botox is derived from Botulinum toxin, discovered nearly five decades ago and was tested for use as a treatment for disorders of the mind. In 1989 Botox was finally approved by the FDA to treat eye muscle disorders like blepharospasm (uncontrollable blinking), strabismus (crossed eyes) and even wrinkles.

Botox can have this affect if it is injected into areas of the forehead that control the muscles there that cause frowning and after a number of treatments the lines start to lessen. If this procedure is continued, in many instances the lines will soften so much they will appear to disappear and now the same procedure is used on other areas of the face where lines form, generally with age.

To allay any fears about injection toxin into our bodies; these injections only contain a diluted and purified version of the poison that can make us very sick. A person who has undergone this treatment still has enough movement to provide some expressions but they are limited and because most of the wrinkles and creases have all but disappeared, it appears that the person is younger than their true years. Botox treatment is expensive with the average cost of just one Botox injection in the United States ranging from a few hundred dollars to in excess of 1,000 dollars depending on where the injection is used.

As a recent form of cosmetic enhancement it may be some time before the full facts about long term botox use will be known but for now, most people really aren’t that concerned.
