Teens + Botox

Botox has become a well used cosmetic enhancement over the last few years by ridding people of age line and wrinkles but how much do you know about Botox. Before this can be done we need to go back a little in time to when botox was originally discovered.

Used originally for disorders of the brain, botox was first studied back in the early 1960’s and derived from the now famous poison Botulinum toxin. In 1989 Botox was finally approved by the FDA to treat eye muscle disorders like blepharospasm (uncontrollable blinking), strabismus (crossed eyes) and even wrinkles.

More research was carried out into other medical uses and in 2000 it was allowed to be used on patients that had serious contractions in their shoulders and neck, easing the pain and contractions; it as also given the ok to be used on another more unusual eye condition. Scientists found that if the drug was injected into the lines between the eyebrows it would gradually soften them and make them disappear so after tests, in 2002 the FDA allowed it to be used for the first cosmetic enhancement and botox had a new field of use.

Teens + Botox...

When Botox is injected into the muscles of the forehead, it blocks nerve impulses which results in the weakening of the muscles that cause frowning and eventually over a period of several months, given enough of these injections, the frown lines start to soften. If this procedure is continued, in many instances the lines will soften so much they will appear to disappear and now the same procedure is used on other areas of the face where lines form, generally with age.

Botox injections themselves are actually a diluted form of botulism; the same botulism that can make us very ill but botox use in cosmetic surgery is a purified form the Botulinum toxin. The popularity of botox is due to the fact that we all have wrinkles and lines when we smile, laugh and make other facial gestures which are the result of muscles in the face.

Botox is able to take back for a temporary period all those years of lines, creases and wrinkles that have formed from the use of our facial muscles; a problem we do not have when we are young. Muscles in the area of the injection become paralyzed temporarily so they cannot move which provide the user with a facial surface that is smooth and often referred to as looking like a dummy or mannequin.

Depending on the amount of treatments, a person who ahs botox treatment can look fairly normal but their facial gestures will be restricted so that the creases and lines do not show. The obvious downside to this treatment is the cost and that is why it has been coined as something only celebrities have carried out as the least expensive injection can still cost upwards of 300 dollars to in excess of 1,000 dollars.

As a recent form of cosmetic enhancement it may be some time before the full facts about long term botox use will be known but for now, most people really aren’t that concerned.
